7 Qualities to Supplement Your Faith | Finn

Untitled design

Today I want to keep things simple. I want to supply you with some content for you to meditate on scripture and allow god to speak to you on some qualities peter mentions in 2 peter.

I will give you the orignial name and meaning of the quality and then three scriptures to medite on. I encourage you to find more scripture on these and ask God for strength

Confirm your calling and election

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.  For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness,  and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.  For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.  Therefore, brothers,[g] be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.  For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

1. Virtue

Arete: a virtous course of thought, feeling and action, moral goodness
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8

Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Colossians 3:13

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23

2. Knowledge

Gnosis- knowledge signifies in general intelligence, understanding, moral wisdom, such as is seen in right living

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7

Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe in your commandments. Psalm 119:66

For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,  1 Corinthians 12:8

3. Self control

Egkrateia: the virtue of one who masters his desires and passions
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 2 timothy 1:7

A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls. Proverbs 25:28

The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. 1 peter 4:7

4. Steadfastness

Hypomone: patience, constancy, endurance

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. 1 corinthians 15:58

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 2 peter 3:9

5. Godliness

Eusebeia: reverence, respect, piety toward god, holiness

For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. 1 timothy 4:8

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. Psalm 1:1-3

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Romans 12:1

6. Brotherly affection

Philadelphia: love of brothers or sisters, brotherly love. The love which Christians cherish for each other as brethren

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. John 13:34

Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Romans 12:10

Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. 1 john 4:11-12

7. love

Agape: affection, good will, love

This is the type of love God has for us and has called us to posses as well. It the the unconditional type of love and the type of love described in 1 corinthians. It is not the type of love the world possesses which will crumble under hard circumstances, but the type of love that we can only obtain and show by Gods strength

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.    1 corinthians 13:4-8

And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.    Colossians 3:14

There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.1 john 4:18

Pray and Seek God

I encourage you all to pray over these scriptures and to seek God on these qualities. Peter says that whomever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that they are actually blinded and have forgotten that God has cleansed us all from sin. As hard as it is sometimes and as painful as your circumstances may be I pray that you grab ahold these qualities. When we practice these qualities we will never fall. Stand firm my friends and keep pressing forward with God.

I used the Creative Retreat July Kit to first stamp the light bulb. Then I took my notes and used the enamel dots to mark each virtue. Then I used the stickers to put down hope love mercy and grace. Lastly I put the cute bow at the top.
