Kind words are like honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body. ~Proverbs 16:24
Oh the power of our words! They either bring life or death to those who hear them. In the book of James the power of the tongue is made clear…”But no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” (3:8)
How do we overcome the power of our tongues? First, we ask. Like David, we too can ask the Lord to set a guard over our mouths and to keep watch over the door of our lips. (Psalm 141:3) Actually, the bible is FULL of verses that teach us how to pray in regards to this area. Putting these verses in our memory bank sure does help when we are struggling with the attitudes of our hearts and minds. Training ourselves to pray through the scriptures BEFORE speaking is very fruitful! I’ll share a few of the verses that I pray to God….
“Let the words of my mouth be acceptable to You, Lord.” Psalm 19:14
“Help my speech to be gracious, Lord.” Colossians 4:6
“You are fighting for me, I can remain silent.” Exodus 14:14
“Please help me to see this person as you do.” James 3:9
Are there any particular verses that help you? Please share; I’d love to add more to memory. 🙂
And secondly, we can speak kinder simply by being in His Word daily. Spending time with the One who formed us. He knows what we are made of and His Word has the power to transform our hearts…”For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (Luke 6:45)
Speaking kind words to others takes a lot more than just a desire. We need the Holy Spirit to help us. We need training… continual training. Like James said, “no human being can tame the tongue.” And boy! It sure is worth the training when we know what scripture says about kind words…they bring sweetness to the listener’s soul and health to their body! I want everyone that the Lord puts in my life to experience that blessing.
