He Calls Us Friend | by Cece

Jesus gathered his disciples one last time, on the night before his death, to prepare them for His death and that evening he said, “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you” (John 15:15). To be called Jesus’s servant is a privilege. Yet Jesus brings us even closer. He calls us friends.

There is no such thing as a perfect friend. Our friends, even the best of them, will for sure disappoint us and sometimes even leave us. Having been living in Shanghai for almost ten years has been hard in the friend department because it is such a transient city and people are always coming and going, so much so that I’ve in a way stopped making new friends. More so, all my friends from back home have grown and moved on with their lives and growing apart is inevitable with some.

But Jesus, in all His goodness and glory, decided to call us His friends. He opened His heart and lets us into the deepest parts of Him. While a friend doesn’t always let you in on what they’re up to, Jesus revealed his Father’s will to us. But above all, He died for us on a cross to prove His love for us so that we will know how much He treasures us as His friends.
