Hi friends! I am so excited to be back with this blog post today! Once again, this devotional has just hit the spot I needed. This Bible story has always fascinated me. In Daniel chapter 3, King Nebuchadnezzar creates a huge statue of gold, and basically forces people to worship the statue every time they hear a certain music playing. Whoever doesn’t do that will be thrown in a fiery furnace (has anyone else watched the VeggieTales adaptation of this Bible story?).
But there were three Jews, Shadrach, Meschach and Abednego, who refused to bow before the statue. The king summons them before him and asks them if it is true, and gives them one more chance, otherwise they will be thrown into the furnace. Well, they didn’t do it and they believed God would deliver them out of king Nebuchadnezzar’s hand. The king was furious and order the fire to be heated seven times more than usual, and the three friends were cast into the fiery furnace. This is where something amazing happens – the fire was so hot that it killed the men who threw them into the fire, yet Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego weren’t burning, and there was a fourth person with them! This person was most likely Jesus or an angel. And these men come walking out of the fire, not even slightly burnt or smelling like fire! This is so powerful friends. Here is what it made me think about.
As Christians, we have the choice to follow the world, or to follow God. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God: what is good, and acceptable, and perfect.” These three friends chose to not conform to the world, even if it might mean death. God could have chosen to let them die. But He didn’t. What this shows me is that sometimes we are scared, and we think God isn’t helping us, and we give up hope. But even when it seems too late, God is with is in the fire! He is by our side through it all!
What an amazing Bible story, friends! Please take the time to read Daniel 3 this week, and if you are in a fire right now, remember that it’s not too late for God to save you, and He is by your side through it all!
