Bible Journaling with Heidi: Count It All Joy

Hello friends! I am so excited to be back to share this post with you, because I will be sharing something that I went through where this verse (James 1:2-3) really made me think and pray.

James 1:2-3 says, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.”

Three and a half years ago, I learned that I had cancer. I went through about two weeks of tests before getting my first chemo. I was going to be alone for my first chemo, because my parents had to go back to work after having been with me through most of those tests (but don’t worry, I only went to chemo alone one other time). I was terrified. The night before that first chemo treatment, I wanted to read my Bible, but I didn’t know what to read. I wanted something I could relate to in my current situation. I felt a nudge to read James, so I started and read these verses.

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” James 1:2-4

Well, let me tell you I never got past the four first verses! It calmed my heart knowing that God had a purpose for this trial. I wrote the verses out many times and prayed and though I was still terrified, I felt peace in my heart.

The word steadfast means fixed in direction, steadily directed, firm in purpose. Isn’t that interesting? It definitely still wasn’t easy, but God allowed this trial in my life to test my faith and make it stronger.

So I want to encourage you – whatever trial you are going through right now, stay strong in the Lord. Talk to Him. Don’t give up, no matter how hard it is. He has a plan, no matter how hard it might be to believe in the situation you are in right now, He has a plan. It’s not easy, but trust Him through it all. He’s got your back, and don’t ever forget that.
