Anyone trusting in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like foliage.Proverbs 11:28
The book of Proverbs frequent uses contrasts to make a point and sometimes there’s a little twist to it. Solomon begins by saying, “Anyone trusting in his riches will fall.” Here’s the twist – to the unbelieving world, riches is a sign of success, of satisfaction, of security. Solomon argues that riches, in fact, can provide none of these. Even worse, the one who trusts in them will surely be brought down by that misplaced confidence.
By contrast, the wise king says, “but the righteous will flourish like foliage.” What does it mean to be righteous? Basically, it means to be right with God, but how do we get there? By being in a growing relationship with him based on faith in Christ and expressing itself in a hunger for his word, a desire to pray, and obedience to the Great Commission. It’s not that we earn or achieve righteousness before God. The Bible says that our faith is counted as righteousness (Romans 4:3). “Flourish” shouldn’t be interpreted as economic success (although God is generous in various ways), rather the idea of flourishing is bigger than that and rooted in a spiritual truth. If we were created to know, worship, and love our God, then flourishing means fulfilling that purpose which is exactly where we find true success, satisfaction, and security.
For this page, I used a combination of printables and the physical “Flourish” kit. I created a journaling card from the digital devotional. If you are just working with the physical kit, you can use the back of the devotional card. I rounded the edges with a corner punch, and using some ink and a blending tool, I added some color along the edge of the card. The card by itself seemed to blend into the page so adding a little color helps it pop out a little more. I stamped my title on the card and used foam tape to make it stand off the page a little. I used the stamps and stickers from the kit to add more detail to the page. I also used a small piece of a journaling card from the digital kit and stapled it to the bottom of the card. I used more foam tape behind the journaling card to give it a little more dimension. I finished the page off with one of the cute bow clips and some paint splatters.
