Bible Journaling With Jill | Listen and Obey

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.  And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.  And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

Matthew 7:24-29

We have a 4 year old and a 2 year old in our family. Throughout the day, I am constantly giving them instruction. I do this because I love them.  Yes, I want them to do certain things, but it’s about more than that. I don’t want them to just do the right things. I want them to become a certain kind of person – one who is kind, considerate, compassionate, generous, but most of all, who loves Jesus above everything else. Believe it or not, they don’t always listen to me, and I have to admit that’s frustrating to me. Sometimes, it’s flat out disappointing, but I still love them for who they are.

God has given us instruction through His word. Like any good father, He wants the best for His children. He doesn’t just want them to do certain things, but become a certain kind of person. He knows what is best and His commands reveal that. Knowing that He loves and wants good things for us, it would be foolish not to listen to Him, and yet we choose our own path. We frequently reject His commands and pursue sinful attitudes and actions, but He loves us in spite of our sin. This is the astonishing reality of the gospel, and what better motivation is there for obedience than this kind of love?

I started creating this page by painting the background using Handmade Modern acrylic paint in brick, forget-me-not, and white. I used a large paint brush, blending the colors together as I went. I wanted my title and flowers to stand out more, so I added white paint to the middle of the page where I did my stamping. I used the stamp set for the Mirror Mirror kit and the God Can stamp set. I used black ink to write out my title and to create a wreath of flowers. To mark my verse, I used two heart stickers from the kit.
